Recently the subject of pirates has experienced a surge in popularity, and the possibility of finding a pirate in your family tree is a beguiling one. Pirate ancestry is a difficult thing to trace, for the criminal element of the 16th and 17th centuries rarely had much regard for sacramental records, and were unlikely to want to be traced, even for the purposes of genealogy!
