You may wonder what Cornish Tin mining has to do with the World Cup.
It has been suggested that Cornish tin miners were responsible for introducing football to South America in the late 19th century. So it would seem that when we lose to our South American competitors we are being beaten at our own game! No doubt Cornishmen played football wherever they went, popularizing it in the process.
