It was not until 1823 that a person, who died FELO DE SE i.e. by his own hand or literally a felon of himself, was allowed a dignified burial. This year saw the FELO DE SE bill introduced to Parliament by Mr. Thomas Barrett-Lennard, then MP for Ipswich. The bill abolished the practice of running a stake through the body of person who had committed Felo de Se "…the infliction of this odious and disgusting ceremony was not he believed enjoined by any written charter but by an old custom." (Hansard 23rd May 1823)
